Hello World podcast: Season 6 episode 3

Why is understanding cybersecurity so important?

APRIL 15, 2024 SEASON 6 EPISODE 3

Cybersecurity is a key topic in computing education. From classroom lessons to challenges and competitions, there are lots of opportunities for learners to discover cybersecurity. There are also many pitfalls where learners’ online activities put them at risk of cyber attacks. Today we discuss some of these risks, along with how to inspire your learners about the many career opportunities in cybersecurity.

How can educators help their learners keep themselves and their data safe online, and use cybersecurity as a topic to get young people excited about computing?

Joining us on this episode are two experts who offer their perspectives and insights:

  • Claire Walden, who is the Cybercrime Education & Partnership Coordinator at SEROCU, a police unit focused on organised crime. Claire works with schools and other partner agencies, delivering training on cyber choices and cyber protect advice, and previously worked in teaching for 14 years.

  • Nik Kelsey is the education director for Cyber First North East and the national lead for cybersecurity for the National Centre for Computing Education.
